Vivekananda was known as a key figure for introducing the Indian philosophies of Vedanta & Yoga to the western world. He was the chief disciple of the 19th century, Indian Mystic Ramakrishna.
Vivekananda Rock Memorial situated in Vavathurai, Kanyakumari, the southern-most tip of India, was built in 1970. It is said that Swami Vivekananda attained enlightenment on this rock. Locals also believe, it is on this rock, that Virgin Goddess, Kanya Kumari performed Tapas on devotion for Lord Shiva.
The memorial has a meditation hall known as Dhyan Mandapam attached for the visitors to perform meditation. Tourists, from all over the world visit here to learn the oldest and authentic form of meditation.
Memorial consists of two main structures, the Vivekananda Mandapam and Shripada Mandapam. It has a hall, where visitors can attend seminars on how to meditate.
The design of the mandapam incorporates a different style of temple architecture from all over India. Since, It has such a beautiful structure and is surrounded by the Laccadive Sea, the scenic beauty of this place is so serene and peaceful.
The memorial is situated 400m off the mainland, therefore, there are a lot of ferries continuously taking visitors from the mainland to the memorial.
Vivekananda believed in serving mankind to the fullest, as he quoted,
“The more we come out and do good to other, the more our hearts will be purified and God will be in them.”
